LRP Operation Excerpts

To facilitate research, the following are excerpts from the documents where LRP activities are reported

8 February 1968
At ZA197345, LRP H4B took two individuals under fire, one NVA KIA.

14 February 1968
At YA875652, IFFV LRP Team 23 made contact with seven armed individuals, resulting in two NVA KIA.

18 February 1968
At YA877657, IFFV LRP Team 32 killed one NVA.

19 February 1968
At YA851652, LRP 44 made contact with an estimated 20-40 NVA, resulting in four US WIA, 12 NVA KIA.

22 February 1968
At YA843712, LRP 27 observed four VC chopping a tree near a bunker. The patrol took them under fire,

killing two and wounding and capturing another.

At YA885682, LRP 34 killed one VC.

25 February 1968
At YA865718, an aircraft attempting to extract a LRP Team received ground fire, two US WIA.

26 February 1968
At ZA007175, LRP 2D killed one VC

28 February 1968
At YB843705, LRP Team 11 ambushed a group of 25-30 NVA, resulting in 20 NVA KIA.
At YB938307, LRP 1D killed one NVA.

2 March 1968
LRP Key Chain was surrounded by an estimated NVA Battalion at YB913102. Helicopters fired

rockets in support, setting off secondary explosions which continued for over an hour.

5 March 1968
At YB995287, LRP 1B found 11 NVA bodies.
At YA978357 LRP 2D found a hut with 300 pounds of rice.

8 March 1968
LRP Ball-Cap found a battalion size base camp with bunkers and medical supplies. There were two roads

from the southeast leading into the area at YB750252.

On 8 March, a LRP team in the Cay Giep Mountains spotted an NVA company apparently
on a supply mission. Artillery and tactical air strikes were called resulting in numerous

secondary explosions, the destruction of a bridge, and 30 NVA killed.

11 March 1968
At YB915328, Long Range Patrol H1A found a mortar position, with seven rounds of 52mm mortar fired.

12 March 1968
At ZA881365, Long Range Patrol 36 found a weapons cache with two RPG rockets, three rifles with

grenade launchers, one AK-47, and one B-40 rocket.

13 March 1968
At ZA018168, LRP H2A made contact with an unknown size force resulting in one US WIA.

14 March 1968
At YB846060, LRP H1A set up a hasty ambush for four NVA resulting in three NVA KIA. The patrol withdrew

75 meters and made contact with one NVA, killing him.

17 March 1968
At YB738045, LRP T-12 observed eight enemy trucks on the NVA road. The lead vehicle was disabled and the

other seven trucks were lined up behind it. Artillery was fired destroying one truck.

Five trucks moved up the road to the northwest and artillery was called in again destroying two trucks, with an estimated

6 to 10 enemy KIA.

20 March 1968
At YA962365, LRP 2B made contact with an unknown size force, resulting in one US WIA.

Aircraft reinserting the patrol received heavy ground fire from YA963336.

21 March 1968
Long Range Patrol 2B made contact with an unknown size enemy force at YA960366. The enemy fired

claymore mines and small arms and threw grenades.

The fire was returned, resulting in one VC KIA and one small arm CIA.

6 April 1968
At YA987447, LRP 2B engaged an unknown size force and killed two NVA.

At ZA211831, LRP #12 killed two NVA

9 April 1968
At ZB993033, LRP HH61 called artillery in on four NVA, killing one.

10 April 1968
At ZV243222, LRP Team 35 received SA fire from an unknown size force, one US WIA.

11 April 1968
At YA941976, LRP GB-12 engaged three to five NVA and called in artillery, resulting in two NVA KIA.

12 April 1968
At ZA0855405, LRP H2A was ambushed by an unknown size VC force, resulting in one US KIA, one US WIA.

17 April 1968
At AQ835335, LRP 34 made contact with an estimated 10-15 individuals. Gunships were employed, resulting in one

VC KIA and several secondary explosions.

At AQ815387, LRP 36 made contact with two VC, resulting in one VC KIA, one VC PW, and two carbines CIA.

At YA976488, LRP 4E killed one NVA, and captured an AK-47.

20 April 1968
At ZB163462, LRP H1A observed three VC and killed one.

21 April 1968
At YA887816, LRP 4B made contact with an estimated NVA platoon and called in gunships and artillery.

Results were three NVA KIA and six SA weapons captured.

24 April 1968
At YA783427, LRP 4B engaged several NVA, killing one and capturing an AK-47.

25 April 1968
LRP 3C found one NVA body at ZA147942.

2 May 1968
At YA984942, Long Range Patrol 3B made contact with an unknown size enemy force. Artillery was employed

as the patrol broke contact and linked up with Company C, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry.

Enemy casualties could not be determined.

3 May 1968
At YA919801, Long Range Patrol 4C made contact with an unknown size enemy force, resulting in one US KIA.

The patrol was extracted and gunships expended in the area with unknown results.

4 May 1968
At ZA057457, Long Range Patrol 2F engaged four NVA with small arms fire killing two. Gunships

were employed and the patrol was extracted.

8 May 1968
Long Range Patrol H4 made contact at ZA112809 resulting in one NVA KIA.

9 May 1968
At ZB094455, Long Range Patrol 1A made contact with 15 man force killing one NVA. Artillery was fired in support.

12 May 1968
At ZA199795, Long Range Patrol H4E had one man wounded by sniper fire.
At YA969392, Long Range Patrol 2A employed artillery on 22 individuals, killing an estimated 15.

15 May 1968
Long Range Patrol 2A engaged five enemy, killing one at YA961368.

17 May 1968
At ZA055217, Long Range Patrol H2C engaged three individuals resulting in one VC KIA.
At ZA005867, Long Range Patrol 3B engaged three individuals with small arms resulting in two NVA KIA.

18 May 1968
Long Range Patrol 4C made contact with an estimated ten NVA, killing one NVA before being extracted.

Long Range Patrol 4C exchanged fire with three individuals at YA922806, resulting in one US WIA and one NVA KIA.

Long Range Patrol 2H made contact at ZA158192.

At ZA158192, Long Range Patrol 2H engaged five VC, killing one.

22 May 1968
Long Range Patrol 2B killed two VC at YA987228.

23 May 1968
Long Range Patrol 4D killed three VC at ZA004768.

30 May 1968
Long Range Patrol 4C engaged an unknown size enemy force at ZB008259 killing 4 NVA.

2 June 1968
Long Range Patrol 3D reported two HOI CHANHS with weapons and documents had been secured at YA898933.

3 June 1968
Long Range Patrol 1C found two NVA bodies killed by air or artillery at YB917613.
Long Range Patrol 3D received small arms fire and grenades from one individual at YA898933.

The individual fled north after wounding one US.

5 June 1968
Long Range Patrol H2A found one VC at ZA088720 believed killed by Spooky.

6 June 1968
Two individuals from Long Range Patrol 4B were injured by punji stakes at ZA019157.

8 June 1968
One VC was killed by Long Range Patrol 2E at ZA088518.

12 June 1968
One NVA was killed by air strikes requested by Long Range Patrol H2A at ZA008449.

4 July 1968
Hawkeye 1A had one team member wounded by enemy small arms fire at YBS19366.

5 July 1968
LRP 3G found one NVA killed by artillery at ZB040011.

10 July 1968
At YA966452, LRP 2F found an estimated 80 rifle grenades. Five VC approached the position and

exchanged small arms fire with the LRPs, wounding three US.

13 July 1968
LRP 4HD killed three NVA at YZ747363.

23 July 1968
LRP 1C killed two NVA at YB804313.

27 July 1968
LRP 4F made contact with 10-15 NVA at ZA003404, killing one NVA.

4 August 1968
At 1745H in the vicillity of YA939345, LRP Team H4B made contact with 1 individual resulting in 2 US WIA.

Gunships were employed and team was extracted.

7 August 1968
At l540H in Vicinity ZU259868, LRP Team H2C observed 2 individuals 50 meters west of their location.

Gunships were employed with unknown results.

At 1755H, LRP H2C reported in contact with an estimated NVA platoon. Contact broke 1801H.

Results were 1 NVA KIA and team extracted 1830H.

9 August 1968
LRP team 2H at 075011 in vicinity ZV113154 made contact with 4 NVA resulting in 2 NVA KIA.

Team was extracted. A later sweep of this area revealed 1 NVA WIA.

13 August 1968
LRP Team 1F at 1630H observed 2 NVA and engaged them with fire at YB908531. Results one NVA KIA.

Team estimated it was a 7 man force.

17 August 1968
LRP Team lC found one NVA body at YB916188 estimated 2-3 weeks old.

18 August 1968
LRP Team lG employed gunships against 8 NVA observed at YB818502 with unknown results.

19 August 1968
LRP Team 10 found 15 bunkers at YB907168, recently used. Also found 20 NVA bodies estimated

to be 2 months old. NVA were apparently killed by artillery believed to be a result of 3 June contact in that area.

21 August 1968
LRP Team lF made contact with two NVA at YB898517. Small arms fire was exchanged and artillery was adjusted.

Results were unknown.

22 August 1968
At 0915H, vicinity YB955261, Hawkeye Team 1T made contact with an estimated two

individuals. Grenades were employed resulting in one NVA KIA.

23 August 1968
LRP Team 2B found two huts recently used at ZU247853, containing VC flag and documents. As team moved toward

LZ location contact was made with an unknown size enemy fore. Small arms fire was exchanged and

artillery was employed. Team was extracted.

26 August 1968
At 1125H at ZU148856, LRP Team 2A made contact with an estimated 45 NVA resulting in 5 NVA KIA. Artillery was employed

and the team was extracted.

29 August 1968
LRP Team 1B killed 2 NVA at YB865508 then received heavy automatic weapons fire from an estimated 2 NVA companies.

Team was extracted.

1 September 1968
Hawkeye Team 1D observed 2 individuals at ZB020261 each armed with an SKS. An additional 10 individuals

were observed soon after gunships extracted the team and air/strike were adjusted. ·The FAC reported 13 NVA KIA.

6 September 1968
At 1800H in the vicinity of AQ8963l6, LRP 2C made contact with an unknown size
force. The team was extracted with 2 US KIA and 1 US WIA.

11 September 1968
At 1655H, LRP Team 4C reported contact with 20-25 NVA at YB947123. Small arms fire was exchanged and the LRP team withdrew.
Gunships were employed with unknown results and the team was extracted.

26 September 1968
LRP 3A, at YA 975728, heard movement around their position and received several incoming grenades. At 0450H the LRP detonated

their claymore and threw hand grenades at an unknown size force which resulted in 4 NVA KIA.The team was extracted

with negative casualties.

30 September 1968
At 1950H, LRP 2F made contact with 5-B NVA at AQ898168, resulting in 1 NVA KIA.

1 October 1968
At 1615H, 2d Brigade LRP 2D made contact with an estimated platoon of NVA, vic AQ922226. Gunships were employed

and the team was extracted. Results were 2 NVA KIA.

4 October 1968
At 1630H, 2d Brigade LRP 2F made contact with 20-25 NVA at ZV249169 and was extracted. Results were 3 NVA KIA.

8 October 1968
At 1530H, 2d Brigade LRP 2C observed 20 individuals at AQ758143 and adjusted artillery on them with unknown results.
At 1740H, 2nd Brigade LRP 2F made contact with an enemy force of unknown size. Artillery was employed and the LRP was extracted.
Results were 1 NVA KIA.

9 October 1968
At 1030H, 2d Brigade LRP 2C made contact with a 20-man enemy force, wounding 1 enemy. Artillery and gunships were employed

with unknown results. The LRP was extracted.

11 October 1968
At 2207H, 2d Brigade LRP 2D observed 16 individuals with unidentified weapons at AQ915185. The LRP adjusted artillery

with unknown results.

12 October 1968
At 1950, 2d Brigade LRP 2F made oontact with 10-12 individuals. The enemy employed small arms. and a grenade, resulting in 2 US WIA.

Gunships were employed and the team was extracted.

14 October 1968
At 2010H, 2d Brigade LRP 2C made contact with an enemy force of unknown size. Gunships were employed and the LRP was extracted.

Results were 1 NVA KIA.

18 October 1968
At 1020H, 2d Brigade LRP 2D received AK-47 fire from an estimated enemy platoon. Artillery was employed and the team was extracted.

Two US were WIA. Enemy casualties were unknown.

21 October 1968
At 1645H, 3d Brigade LRP 3F, at YA745233, observed 35 – 40 individuals. Gunships, artillery and airstrikes were employed and the

LRP was extracted. Results were 3 NVA KIA.

At 1905H, 2d Brigade LRP 2H made contact with 7 enemy and requested extraction. One team member was not present when the team

was extracted. The team leader fell from the extraction helicopter. Results were 1 US KIA, 1 US MIA.
